WHAT'S IN A NAME?

I've never seen a seacow,
I never hope to see one.
But, I can tell you here and now,
I'd rather see, than be one.

Strange sounding compound words come together to provide some striking images.
Examples: shoetree, shoehorn, clotheshorse,... you get the general idea.
Your quest today is to incorporate as many of these into your story.

SCHOOL'S OUT

The end has come.
No more pencils, no more books.
Have the students been dismissed, or have
they been banished to a life of ignorance?
Your story is one of desertion and desolation.
Write it!

TIME FOR A CHANGE

Photo from Peanuts - Charles Schultz

Mike asked me to fill in for him. He has been exploring the concept of time, so in keeping with his vision...

Answer these:
The time of day, a make and model of car, your favorite food, a city anywhere in the world, the guadiest color, an exotic women's name, and a strange occupation. Now look out your window. Whatever the weather is, reverse it (if it's sunny, make it rain, snow, whatever...).

Using all these variables, write a mystery piece beginning with Snoopy's famous opening line, "It was a dark and stormy night..."

This Upon a Time...

Using a beloved fairy tale from your youth, rewrite the story to modern day with all the convieniences of today's world. But there's a catch.. write it from the antagonist's point of view. There is no happily, ever after... leave it open ended to revisit at a later date.

Father Knows Best

It's Father's Day! And in honor of all of those amazing dads out there, I'd like your story today to include a little fatherly advice - be it preposterous, poignant, wise or whimsical. Share a story about your own dad. Pen a completely fictional tale about an offbeat dad. Or if you happen to be a dad, give us your best fatherly advice, Daddy-O...in story or prose form, of course. Have fun with this, because unlike life under dad's roof, there are no rules. Flash your fatherly fiction today, and share your piece in the comments.

Happy, Happy Father's Day to all of you dads. And Happy Writing, all.

Don't Look Down!!

Image via Photobucket

After much bribing and begging your companion has talked you into going on a hot-air balloon ride. You're very leery to leave the safety of ground and with good reason. The balloon is released to the ethereal and when you reach the end of the rope that was supposed to secure you to the earth, you hear the ripping sound of fabric as the rope ravels to tiny ends and snaps. You're then floating freely in a hot-air balloon with one other person and not one that happens to know how to fly this thing. What happens? What will you do? Where do you end up? Whatever you do, don't look down!!

Time is of the Essence

Today, pick one or more phrases that relate to time and incorporate it/them into your story.  Some examples include: I don't have time, running out of time, too much time on my hands, time moves slowly,  time moves quickly, precious time, wasting time, never enough time or time is of the essence.  I'm sure you could come up with dozens more if you put in enough time.  Use the phrase(s) as well as make reference to things such as clocks or hourglasses, seconds, minutes, hours, daye, weeks, months, years, etc... OK, hurry up, you haven't got all day.

12 Angry Men

Image courtesy of 12 Angry Men

I'm on jury duty this week, so I thought this might be an interesting prompt...what would you do to convince 11 other people - people who have strongly different ideas and beliefs - to agree to 'go along' with your way of thinking? What if you're wrong?  What if you know you're wrong?

What Happened at the Beach?

Pics by L. Kolp

Don't these pictures speak "story, please"? A mysterious woman finds something in the sand... a jellyfish, or perhaps it's a man-of-war, oh no! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Today let's put a different spin on time.  Write your fiction as if:
There is no such thing as time -or- Time doesn't matter at all.

Who is this lady? Where is she going? Who is she with? What are those four bells to her left? What about that shining light above the bells?

I hope the picture inspires you. I can't wait to read your flash fiction pieces. Just post them in the comments below.

Today, let your words float out...
...about a time that felt lighter than air.
...about something that bursts your bubble.
...or about seeing things in a brand new way.

Just write, and see what pops.

~In Ancient Shoes~

~In Ancient Shoes~

Write a historical fiction from the perspective

of a historical figure who experienced it firsthand,

(you may want to do some research for this).
