Would You Like a Character?

(Photobucket: spunky596 )

Will this man find a niche in your short fictional story today?

Hmmm...I like this particular meaning for the word, "niche."

Happy writing Friday Flashy Fiction writers!

THE CUSP OF DECEMBER

As November wanes and we've just one more month to make 2012 memorable,
write a piece of fiction of changes that put you in great position to succeed. I'm not talking apocalyptic happenstances, but a personal change your character makes to improve his prospects for success.

Lost and Found

Your main character has lost everything.  Perhaps in a natural disaster, a flood or a fire.  Now they have found something they never knew they had.

The Mystery Decorator

Who came all this way to decorate this one tree on a rocky crag?  Maybe it was you?  Write a little Flashy Fiction about the decorator.  What inspired the mystery decorator to risk life and limb to add a little color to this lonely tree?

An Excerpt to Insert

"It is required of every man," the ghost returned, "that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men, and travel far and wide; and, if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death."
- Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

FASTER THAN A LOOK

Today's "OPEN MIC" prompt comes from Mariya Koleva who offers this poem to ponder and render into your Flashy Fiction today. Thanks for your contribution, Mariya!

hatred happens faster than a look”

I’ve heard love at first sight exists.
It’s possible.
Yet, I say, there is hate that comes faster than the look.
You search in vain - don’t look for a reason
No need to recall harmful words, treacherous
looks, or treacherous acts – those are not the reason.
It all happens like it does in Nature: a leaf unfolds, or
a leaf falls. A matter of time.

And because death is quicker than birth,
I say:
hatred happens faster than a look.

***

Use Mariya's poem as your inspiration.
Your character is the victim of hatred,
or worse is the perpetrator of such vitriol.
Does he/she let it destroy them,
or do they become stronger for it.

Abstractly Reacting

(Photobucket: misskitty68)

  • The force that propels the human spirit on the clear way forward and upward is the abstract spirit.

-Wassily Kandinsky  'On the Question of Form', in Blaue Reiter Almanac.

  • Literature is not an abstract science, to which exact definitions can be applied. It is an Art rather, the success of which depends on personal persuasiveness, on the author's skill to give as on ours to receive.

- SirArthurThomas known as  'Q' Quiller-Couch
Inaugural lecture as Professor of English at Cambridge University.

  • Abstract refers to something that is not physical or concrete. (adjective)
An example of abstract is the idea of justice.

Determination

Write a bit of Flashy Fiction where you're determined to reach your goal.  So determined that all but the completely oblivious can see it on your face.  Maybe you reach that goal.  Maybe not.

The Shoe Tree

What’s going on here? Tell this story.

Or: write about shoes.
Walking a mile in someone else’s...buying a new pair when you feel down...gleefully shedding them to walk barefoot in velvet grass. Whatever lines you lace today, be sure to throw in plenty of soul.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: PART 1

I can smell the turkey dinner already.
We are heading down the pike to another great gathering of family and friends.
But it isn't always that easy.

You are away from home and have a week to make it in time
for Thanksgiving Day. Write an adventure that will become family lore
as to the lengths you would go for family
(and a steaming turkey drumstick!)

The Light a the End of the Tunnel

No more than a dim spot in the distance, just barely brighter than the surrounding darkness...could it be the light at the end of the tunnel?  Your way out?  Or is it the train coming toward you?  Write a little Flashy Fiction about finally reaching a goal, about finally seeing the light...good or bad.

Who wants to be President?

It's Election Day here in the USA!  Will either of the candidates ever rank among the "Great Presidents"?  For today's prompt, write a bit of Flashy Fiction that shows a candidate running for election.  It can be a speech the candidate gives, a glimpse of them on the campaign trail, or more private moments when the cameras aren't rolling.  What drives your candidate?  Let's see it.

What's up?

Whatever is up there?
Is it true that what goes up must come down...
...or are things really looking up?
You decide.

Flash-in-the-Pan Fiction

Today, cook us up something that includes a recipe (for the best chicken soup, for disaster, for love), or at least a list of ingredients. Throw in a little spice if you’d like. Then share your delicious fiction piece here.

NAWRIMOLILSTO

NaNoWriMo is upon us, and everyone scurries to novelize, poeticize and fictionalize.

So here's your charge for the day.

I declare today as National Write More Little Stories (NaWriMoLilSto) day.

Take a spark of an idea and give it a little life. When the time is right,
use that ember to expand into your next novel undertaking!
