Don't joke. Mom's being serious. “Sorry, Mom, I wasn't trying to be funny.” Sorry isn't an apology. “I apologize.” An apology is not complete until you ask for forgiveness. “Will you forgive me?”
“There's nothing to forgive, James.”
“Your son is so polite.”
“Isn't he?”
“You must be proud.”
“I am! I am so proud of James.”
Don't speak unless spoken to.
“He always knows just how to talk to grown ups and how to act around them.”
“I can see that. It's about time for me to go, Sarah. I hope you have a good evening.”
“You too, Kim.”
When an adult leaves, you must say goodbye. “Have a good evening, Miss Kim.”
Nevets, no good deed (a story) goes unpunished (unmangled). I like the voices in the head/telepathy thing going on here. A little leery of the characters though ;)
