Charles comes into the diner most Tuesday nights. He works across the street at the garage. His wife left him and he doesn't know how to cook much. That first night, he ordered a hamburger and fries (no salt) with a water to drink. Then he leaned across the table. "Can I get a milkshake, too?" Laura was in puppy love from that moment on. Tonight it's been a year since Jean left. Charles declares "I'm celebrating" and selects vanilla bean ice cream with hot fudge and whipped cream, beer and habanero chicken wings. Laura serves the limp drumettes coated in hot sauce and the warm beer with a half smile. She pulls a roll of Tums from her change apron and tucks it in his shirt pocket. Charles leaves without finishing his ice cream, but he takes the Tums.
