Ellis leapt from one decorative stone to the next in the backyard path, avoiding grass, peas dribbling from the cast-iron pan in his hands. The pan clanged against the stone at the base of the statue. He touched his head to the ground three times, bunching his muscles to sprint to the house.
"Don't go."
"What? You talk."
"One sleeps and the years pass." Decaying leaves draped over the statue's head. Her blue lips moved. "You are nearly grown."
"Nana?"
She laughed. "One name for me. Better, perhaps great-great-great-nana."
