Last Chance

"We don't have to do this."

I dropped my cigarette. "You made a promise."

  1. Sometimes when you look at people it’s…like you’re dreaming. As if the alarm clock never rang to wake you up.

He just stood there leaning in the perfect way… he… leans. His hair tossed to the side in his nonchalant way. I had never felt this way about anyone before.

“We don’t have to do this.” He said.

I dropped my cigarette as if...his words were the alarm clock.

“You made…I mean we... made a promise.” I stared into his face. He looked away.

Standing against that stone brick wall the wind blew a leaf across my shoe and in the back of my mind I knew I should wait. That 15 is way too young plus I wasn’t even in love…I think.

But the way he looked at me, the way his hand brushed up against mine as if…we were meant to touch. As if some magnetic force was pulling us together. That time and place was fated.

His lips touched mine. We kissed, intensely.
His hands caressed the small of my back. I felt him pressing into me, hard. My body ached with excitement and pleasure took us to a place that can never be erased.

Fifteen minutes, it was over. We didn’t speak. We didn’t touch.

    “I better take you home.”

“Yeah sure.” Home that’s where I should go, home.

Silence echoed in that car. Confusion hugged the seats. Pulling up to my driveway was like…torture, knowing I had to leave him.

He tried to speak but I stopped him. “I better go inside before my mom starts to worry.”

“Yeah sure.” He leaned his head against the seat. His hand brushed against mine. It was like I was dreaming again only this time I knew I would have to wake up.

  3. "We don't have to do this."

I dropped my cigarette. "You made a promise."

His grey eyes met mine while his boot killed the glowing butt on the cement.

"I did. But you can walk away." His eyes moved to the windows fronting the upper floor apartment.

I followed his gaze. The soft glow of lights was comforting in an odd way. "No. I can't. I made a promise as well."

"Look, I won't think anything of it. Promises made under duress are forgiven. We weren't thinking clearly." He reached for my hand.

I snatched it away and laughed. "Duress? You think that was my motivation?"

"This is something that cannot be undone. It's not a game." His hands trembled slightly as they gripped my face, forcing me to look into his eyes.

"What that bastard did to our mother was not a game either." I spit the words up toward those windows. "That promise I made was to her."

"I guess we do have to do this after all then."
